Prep and transfer the design

Pick a large, round pumpkin with a smooth front face so the crest sits flat and even. Cut a lid from the bottom instead of the top so the stem stays intact for looks, and hollow the wall behind your design to about one inch thick. Tape your printed pattern on and poke through the outlines of the two bats and the ball circle with a pin or awl. Connect the dots lightly with a washable marker before you cut anything.

Peel the ball circle for a mid glow

Use a ribbon or loop tool to shave off just the outer skin inside the ball circle, leaving the flesh below intact. Keep the depth even so the whole circle glows the same soft orange when lit. Do not cut through here, this panel is your shading canvas. Leave the two bat shapes untouched for now so you have a clear map.

Outline the bats with deep edge cuts

Trace the edges of each bat with a small carving saw or V-tool, cutting deeper along the outlines than in the middle. This deeper edge lets light rim the bats without opening a full hole. Keep the barrel, handle, and knob of each bat clearly separated where they cross behind the ball. Work slowly at the X so both bats stay attached and structurally solid.

Peel and shade the bat bodies

Shave the skin off the body of each bat so they glow at the same level as the ball, keeping a thin darker line where each bat overlaps the other. This overlap shadow sells the crossed effect. Vary your peeling depth slightly toward the barrels for a rounded look. Leave the background pumpkin skin fully intact and dark to frame everything.

Etch the stitching last with a fine V-tool

Now add the baseball's two curved seam lines and their rows of stitches using a fine V-tool. Follow your marked curves and keep each little stitch shallow and evenly spaced so they read as neat rows. Carving these last protects the delicate lines from getting bumped while you handle the pumpkin. Take your time, this detail is what makes the ball recognizable.

Light it and set the scene

Drop in a battery LED puck or string lights, never a candle, and set the brightness so the ball and bats glow without washing out the stitches. Place it on a porch step or entry table for a playoff watch party or team dinner. Snap your photo at dusk when the ambient light still shows the pumpkin's shape. Reapply a light coat of petroleum jelly to cut edges if you want it to last longer.
