Step back and check the proportions of the long limbs and arching back. Keep the layout on one broad face so the whole animal stays in view.

   Peel the body to one even depth

   Use a shallow gouge or a lino-style scoop to remove only the outer skin inside the monkey outline, exposing the pale flesh underneath. Aim for one consistent depth, roughly an eighth of an inch, so the whole body glows the same dim orange. Work in small sections and keep the tool moving away from your holding hand. Do not cut through the wall, this design stays on the surface.

   Deepen the fur base coat

   Once the body is evenly peeled, go a little deeper in the shadow zones such as under the belly, along the inner legs, and beneath the chin. These slightly deeper areas will read brighter and give the monkey volume. Leave the outer edge of the silhouette crisp so the shape stays clean against the dark skin. Take your time and compare left to right as you go.

   Pull short directional fur strokes

   Switch to a fine detail loop or a small V-tool and pull short strokes that follow the direction the fur grows, down the back, along the limbs, and out toward the hands and feet. Keep the strokes shallow and slightly overlapping so they catch light as texture rather than lines. Work from the shoulders outward and let the strokes fan around the curves. This is the slow, meditative part, so rest your cutting hand often.

   Carve the spiral tail and face last

   Follow the tail's curl with steady, continuous strokes, keeping the pale band an even width as it spirals inward. Then sharpen the face by deepening the eye socket, the ear rim, and the muzzle for the most contrast on the whole pumpkin. Leave a thin ridge of untouched or lightly peeled skin between coils and around the eye so the features do not blur together. These small dark bridges are what make the face read.

   Light it and photograph

   Drop a battery LED inside, never a candle, and set it low so the light rakes across the etched fur. Turn the pumpkin slowly to find the angle where the strokes and tail spiral show best. Because this is an etched design, also try a shot in normal room light to show the pale relief. Wipe the cut edges dry and it is ready to display.
