Transfer the demon face

Clean the pumpkin and pick the flattest front panel. Tape your stencil in place and poke the outlines with a pin or awl, spacing dots closer together on the curved fangs and cheek spikes. Peel the paper and connect the dots lightly with a pencil so you can see the brows, eyes, nose, and the double row of teeth. Mark clearly which areas are full cutouts and which are shallow shading.

Open the pumpkin and clean the wall

Cut a lid or, better for this design, a wide hole in the back so you can reach in easily and swap lights. Scoop out the pulp and scrape the inside of the front wall down to about one inch thick. A thinner wall makes carving the fangs and spikes far easier and lets more light through. Even out the wall behind the mouth since that is where most of your glow will come from.

Shade the eyes and brows first

Use a lino or ribbon gouge to peel just the top skin off the eye sockets and the inner brow area, leaving the flesh intact so it glows dim orange. Keep the outer edges of the swept brows as untouched dark skin for a hard, angry line. Work slowly and keep depth even so the glare reads as a smolder rather than a bright cut. Save any full eye cutouts for a small slit at the very center of each eye.

Cut the big mouth opening

Cut the large mouth cavity as one clean opening now, while the surrounding shell is still strong. Follow your outline for the overall mouth shape but do not try to carve individual teeth yet. Push the waste piece inward and out through the back hole. Smooth the cut edges so the following fang work has clean starting lines.

Carve the fangs and cheek spikes

Now define the double row of curved fangs by cutting away the gaps around them, leaving each tooth attached at top or bottom. Leave a thin bridge of skin between crowded fangs if they feel wobbly, since a little support keeps them from breaking. Cut the hooked cheek spikes last of all, working from the tip toward the base with light passes. Take your time; these thin points are the most fragile parts of the whole face.

Light it and photograph at dusk

Set two battery LED tea lights inside, one low toward the mouth and one raised toward the eyes, so both areas fill with fire. Skip real candles; the thin fang bridges and shaded areas can scorch and dry out fast. Rub a little petroleum jelly on the cut edges to slow drying and keep the glow crisp. Shoot your photo in the blue light of dusk to match that fierce front-porch mood.
