Leave the true black areas as untouched skin.

   Switch to a ribbon tool or a shallow gouge and peel the skin off the mid-tone fur across the back, cheeks, and legs. Remove only the orange rind so the pale flesh underneath glows a soft amber. Vary your stroke length to suggest individual hairs and keep the tail looking fluffy. Feather the edges so tones blend instead of ending in hard lines.

   Thin the belly and tail for the brightest glow

   For the lightest underbelly and the sunlit edge of the fur, scrape a little deeper so the wall goes nearly translucent, but keep a thin membrane so no true holes form. This gives the strongest glow without collapsing the detail. Save these thinnest areas for last, since they weaken the wall. Test against a light as you go and stop when the tone matches your map.

   Light it and photograph on the porch

   Drop in a bright LED puck or a couple of battery tea lights, never a real flame, so the fine shading is not scorched. Set the pumpkin at eye level on a step and dim the surrounding lights to make the glow pop. Take photos at dusk when the warm carving and the blue evening balance nicely. Mist the cut surfaces with water and refrigerate overnight to keep the detail crisp.
