Work slowly and step back often with a light behind it, since you can always remove more but cannot put skin back.

   Etch the grass tufts and ground line with light, tapered strokes so they stay dim and grounded. Give the little pile just a thin skim of peeling on its highlights and leave the rest as skin so it reads clearly against the glow. Only the eye glints, if any, get cut fully through for a sharp spark. Save any true cutouts for last so the wall stays strong while you carve.

   Light it and photograph

   Drop a bright LED puck or two inside, warm white if you have it, and set it low so the glow rises through the fur. Check that the highlights pop and the outlines still read as shadow, and shave any spots that look flat. Set it on a porch step at dusk for the best photo, with the light off to the side of the camera to avoid glare. A little petroleum jelly on cut edges slows drying if you want it to last a few extra days.
