The Long-Nosed Abstract Face

A bold abstract face with heavy rectangular brows, deep-set rectangular eyes, a long vertical nose bar, and curling tusk-like cheek accents fills a tall oval pumpkin in this artistic faces pumpkin carving idea. All features are fully pierced so the abstracted portrait glows with strong contrast. The brow and eye shapes share rind walls, so cut the gap between them carefully to avoid snapping the thin ridge that holds both features. Seen from across a dining room table, the Picasso-like composition reads as both comical and striking.

Our tips for carving a similar design

The core trick here is contrast: every feature is a clean cutout, so the whole abstract face glows bright against the dark rind. The plan is to plot the shapes first, carve the small delicate pieces before the big openings, and protect the thin ridge of rind that separates the brows from the eyes. A tall oval pumpkin gives you the vertical room this stretched, Picasso-like layout needs.

From pumpkin to porch

  1. Pick a tall pumpkin and plan the layout

Choose a tall oval pumpkin with a broad, fairly flat front face so the design does not wrap around the curve. Wipe the surface clean and dry it. Sketch the composition lightly in pencil first, keeping the long nose bar centered and the brows and eyes spaced so a strip of rind stays between them. Step back and check the proportions before you commit.

  2. Open the lid and clean out the inside

An adult should cut a lid from the bottom rather than the top so the stem stays intact as a design element. Angle the cut inward so the plug does not fall through. Scoop out the seeds and scrape the front wall down to about one inch thick so your cuts release cleanly. A thinner wall makes the fine tusk accents much easier to carve.

  3. Transfer the pattern and mark bridges

Tape your home-printed stencil over the front and poke the outlines with a pin or a transfer tool so you have a dotted map. Before carving, mark the thin ridge between each brow and eye so you remember to leave it standing. Note the delicate curling cheek accents and plan to keep each curl attached at both ends. Connecting these dots with a light pencil line helps you see the whole face.

  4. Carve the small and thin shapes first

Start with the fine details: the curling tusk-like cheek accents and the narrow slivers around the eyes. Use a small carving saw with slow, gentle strokes and let the tool do the work rather than forcing it. Keep the ridge between the brows and eyes intact by cutting up to it from both sides, not through it. Cutting the fragile pieces while the pumpkin is still solid keeps them from tearing.

  5. Cut the large openings last

Once the fine work is done, carve the heavy rectangular brows, the deep eye shapes, and the long vertical nose bar. Support each piece with your free hand as you finish the cut so it does not crack the surrounding wall. Push each freed piece inward and out rather than pulling it forward. Saving the big openings for last means the pumpkin stays rigid while you handle the delicate areas.

  6. Light it and take your photo

Set a battery LED puck or string inside for safe, steady light, never a candle. Test in a dark room and rotate the light until the nose bar and eyes glow evenly. Clean up any ragged edges with a fresh blade for crisp contrast. Shoot from across a table so the abstract face reads at a distance the way it is meant to.

Gather your supplies

Check things off as you get ready.

Work on a stable surface, keep your free hand out of the cutting path, and have an adult handle sharp tools.

Three levels of light

  • Leave intact

The broad cheeks and outer surface of the pumpkin stay untouched and dark, framing the face.

  • Peel & shade

Skin-peel a faint halo just outside the brows or a shallow shadow under the nose for a soft dim glow.

  • Cut through

Fully cut the brows, eyes, long nose bar, and curling cheek accents so they shine brightest.

Learn the carving basics

Before you start cutting

How do I keep the ridge between the brows and eyes from snapping?

That thin strip of rind holds both features, so treat it as a bridge you must protect. Carve up to it from the brow side and the eye side separately instead of dragging one continuous cut across it. Go slow with a small saw and avoid twisting the blade near that ridge.

Do I really need a tall pumpkin for this face?

Yes, the layout is stretched vertically with a long nose bar, so a tall oval shape gives the features room to breathe. A short, round pumpkin forces the shapes together and the face loses its abstract look. Pick one with a flat front so the design does not distort around the curve.

The cheek accents look fragile. How do I keep them from breaking?

Carve those curling tusk-like shapes early while the pumpkin is still solid and firm. Keep each curl attached at both ends so no piece is left dangling. Thinning the wall to about an inch first lets the small blade glide through without you having to push hard.

Your take belongs here, too.
