Nurse Hartley's Heartbeat

From pumpkin to porch

1. 1

Prep the pumpkin and pick a wall

Choose a tall pumpkin with a smooth, flat front panel big enough for the figure and the heart beside her. Cut a lid from the bottom instead of the top so the design stays intact, then scoop the inside wall behind the design down to about one inch thick. A thinner wall shades far more evenly and predictably. Wipe the front dry before you transfer the pattern.

2. 2

   Transfer the pattern

Tape a home-printed stencil flat against the front and poke along every line with a poker wheel or push pin. Mark the outlines of the face, cap, scrubs, stethoscope, and heart, and add a few dots to remind you which zones are peel versus cut. Lift the paper and connect faint gaps with a washable marker. Take a photo of your stencil first so you have a reference once the paper is off.

3. 3

Etch the large scrub and skin areas

Using a shallow ribbon or gouge tool, skin the top layer off the scrubs, face, and cap so those areas glow a soft mid orange. Keep your depth even and go slowly, since consistent pressure gives smooth graded tones. Peel a little deeper where you want a brighter blush, like the cheeks and the front of the scrubs. Leave the hair, outlines, and the EKG pulse line as untouched dark skin.

4. 4

Cut the heart for full light

Cut all the way through only the heart shape so it reads as the brightest element. Carefully leave the zigzag heartbeat line as a thin uncarved bridge of skin across the opening so it stays dark and attached on both ends. Support the pumpkin from inside with your free hand as you finish the cut. Clean the edges with a small detail blade.

5. 5

Save the stethoscope and fine lines for last

Now etch the thin stethoscope tubing, collar V, and cap cross, since fine details are strongest when the big cuts are already done. For the tubing, peel a narrow shallow channel rather than cutting through, so the loop stays structurally sound. Take your time on the smile and eyes, using light strokes to keep the cute expression clean. An adult should handle all blade work.

6. 6

   Light it and photograph

Set a battery LED puck or string inside, never a candle, and warm white gives the most flattering skin tone. Check the glow in a dark room and touch up any zone that looks too flat by peeling a hair deeper. Rub cut edges with a little petroleum jelly to slow drying. Place it by a nurse's front door and snap your photo at dusk when the contrast pops.
