   Go back over the topknot, the fluffy ear edges, and the lit side of the face and peel those spots thinner so more light comes through. The thinner the flesh, the brighter the glow, so build gradients gradually rather than in one pass. Keep the eyes, nose, and shadow lines dark to hold the portrait's structure. Step back frequently, since it is easy to over-thin and lose detail.

   Add the few true cutouts

   Reserve full cutouts for only the smallest, brightest catchlights, such as a tiny spark in each eye or a highlight along the muzzle. Cut these last so the panel stays strong while you do the detailed shading. Keep any cut openings small and leave plenty of solid pumpkin between them as bridges. Clean up ragged edges with a fine tool for a crisp finish.

   Light it and photograph

   Set a bright LED puck or string light inside, never a candle, since steady cool light shows off gradients best. View it in a dark room and touch up any tone that reads too flat by peeling a little thinner. If the surface dries and dulls over a day, mist it or rub a thin film of petroleum jelly on cut areas. Shoot your photo at dusk on a porch step for the warmest glow.
