Pick and prep a smooth pumpkin

Choose a pumpkin with one broad, fairly flat side and skin free of big bumps or scars. Since you are only etching the surface, you do not need to open or gut it, which keeps it firm for over a week. Wipe the carving area clean and dry with a paper towel. Set it on a towel or bench so it cannot roll while you work.

Sketch the otter with dry-erase marker

Draw the otter mid-stride in profile, filling most of the flat face with the long body, low legs, and thick tapering tail. Use a dry-erase marker so you can wipe away and redraw until the pose looks right. If you are working from a stencil, tape it on and poke the outline through with a pin, then connect the dots. Mark which way the fur flows along the back, legs, and tail so your strokes stay consistent later.

Carve the clean outline

An adult should handle the sharp tools for this part. With a fine detail knife or a small V-gouge, trace just inside the body outline to define the edge of the otter against the background. Keep the cut shallow, removing only the skin, not carving into the deep flesh. This crisp border is what makes the animal pop, so take your time on the curves of the face and tail.

Peel the body to a mid glow

Using a ribbon loop or the flat of your gouge, shave the skin off the entire otter shape so it turns pale orange. Leave it slightly uneven rather than scraping down to wet pulp, since a thin peel holds color and lasts longer. This gives you a base tone that sits brighter than the dark background but dimmer than your final fur highlights. Wipe away shavings often so you can judge the contrast.

Texture the fur with short strokes

Switch to a small U-gouge and pull short strokes in the direction the coat lies, following the flow lines you marked. Work in overlapping rows down the back, along the legs, and out to the tail tip so the fur reads as sleek and wet. Go a touch deeper for the brightest highlights on the shoulder, cheek, and belly. Leave a few whisker lines and the eye as fine details, keeping thin ridges intact so nothing crumbles.

Seal, light, and photograph

Rub a thin coat of petroleum jelly or vegetable oil over the etched areas to slow drying and deepen the color. This design shines in daylight on a bench or step, so stage it outdoors and shoot with soft morning light. For evening, tuck a small LED puck or string light behind or beside it rather than inside, since there is no cut opening. Refresh the oil after a few days if the surface starts to look dull.
