   Carve the crown leaves in layers

   Outline each leaf blade with a V-tool or knife, then scoop a slight hollow down the center of every leaf so it curves. Vary the leaf lengths and let some overlap for a natural crown. Keep short bridges of flesh between neighboring leaves so nothing snaps off. Work from the back leaves forward so the front blades sit on top.

   Undercut the leaf tips and deepen contrast

   Gently cut in under the edge of each leaf tip so it lifts away from the layer behind it and reads as a separate blade. Go slow and keep the cuts shallow so the thin tips stay attached and strong. Deepen a few of the diamond grooves and leaf hollows to add the darkest accents. Brush away crumbs and check the piece from a few feet back.

   Seal, light, and photograph

   Wipe all cut surfaces with a little lemon juice or a pumpkin preservative spray to slow browning. Because this is a relief piece, light it from the front or side with a small LED spotlight rather than placing a light inside. Set it on a fall runner as a table centerpiece and shoot photos while the flesh is still bright. Refresh with a damp cloth daily to keep the contrast crisp.
