Also note where the letters nearly touch the bubble edge, since those thin spots are the first to tear. Step back a few feet to check that the word reads clearly before you commit.

   Cut the letter openings first

   With a small carving saw, cut out the open parts of the letters starting in the middle of the word and working outward. Keep the little bridges inside both O's uncut so their centers hold. Make slow, straight up and down strokes and let the tool do the work rather than forcing it. Push the loose pieces out gently from the front so you do not crack the surrounding wall.

   Refine the letters and test readability

   Clean up each letter edge with a detail blade so the rounded, comic-book curves look smooth. Hold an LED flashlight inside and view the pumpkin from several feet away to judge how the word reads when lit. If any letter looks cramped or a gap looks muddy, widen it slightly now while the surrounding cloud border is still solid. Trim the exclamation point dot so it stays a clean, separate shape.

   Cut the cloud border last

   Now cut the bumpy bubble outline as one continuous path, following the scalloped edge all the way around including the small triangular tail pointing left. Saving this large opening for last keeps the panel rigid while you carve the fine letters. Support the freed cloud piece with your free hand as you finish the last cut so it does not fall in and chip an edge. Ease all cut edges with a few light passes of the blade to soften them.

   Light it and set it out

   Drop in a battery LED tea light or a small LED puck, never an open flame, since the thin bridges and letters can scorch. Position the light low and centered so it fills both the letters and the cloud border evenly. Rub a little petroleum jelly on the cut edges to slow drying and keep the glow crisp for a few days. Set it on a flat porch step, snap your photo at dusk, and share it with the community.
