Before you start cutting

The ears are at the top edge of the pumpkin and feel very close to the rim. Is that a structural concern?

If the ear aperture is within half an inch of the pumpkin's top edge, the rind in that band is at risk of splitting. In that case, lower the stencil slightly on the pumpkin so the ears have at least three-quarters of an inch of solid rind above them.
