Pick a big pumpkin and plan the layout

A troll face like this needs room for wide ears and a heavy brow, so choose a large, evenly round pumpkin with a smooth front. Cut a lid from the bottom or the back rather than the top, which keeps the tall hair tufts intact and makes it easy to sit over an LED. Scrape the inside wall behind the face down to about one inch so light passes through the thinned areas. Transfer your troll stencil with a pin or transfer paper, marking the ears, nose, brow, and smile.

Rough out the big shapes first

Start with the largest features so you have a solid foundation to refine. Use a loop or ribbon tool to shave the skin off the nose, chin, and cheeks, leaving them slightly raised so they catch light. Round the pointed ears and taper them toward the tips, keeping the rind thick enough that they stay strong. Work slowly and step back often, since relief carving is about removing a little at a time.

Carve the wrinkle and smile lines

Switch to a V-gouge for the crease lines around the eyes, the furrowed brow, and the deep grin folds. Pull each line in one confident stroke so the grooves read cleanly from across the yard. Vary the depth a little so the brow ridge and nose folds cast their own small shadows. These lines are what give the face its mischievous personality, so take your time.

Sculpt the spiky hair tufts

Above the brow, shave the skin from the tall flame shaped tufts so they glow while the gaps between them stay dark skin. Keep the base of each tuft attached to the pumpkin wall for strength and taper the points gradually rather than undercutting them. Leaving thin bridges of untouched skin between tufts keeps the whole crown sturdy. This contrast of glowing spikes against dark gaps sells the wild troll hair.

Thin the eyes and mouth for the ember glow

For the crescent eyes and the open smile, carve down until the rind is very thin but do not punch fully through, which gives that soft orange ember look. Test as you go by holding a light inside and checking the glow from the front. If you want the eyes a touch brighter, you can open two small crescents at the very center. Cut these last so the surrounding skin stays firm while you work.

Light it and photograph

Set a warm white LED puck or a battery string inside and settle the pumpkin over it through your bottom or back opening. Warm light flatters the sculpted skin tones and makes the shaded cheeks and nose pop. Shoot at dusk on a porch step so the ambient light still shows the surface detail. Mist the carved areas with water and cover with plastic in the fridge overnight to keep the face fresh.
