   Cut the small claw fingers first

   Start with the thin strips of the outstretched clawed hand while the surrounding robe is still solid, since removing the robe first would leave those slivers fragile and easy to snap. Use a fine detail saw and gentle, patient strokes. Keep the little bridges of rind between fingers intact so the hand holds its shape. Support each strip with your free hand as you finish the cut.

   Open the robe folds and hollow chest

   Work outward from the finished hand, cutting the flowing robe fold shapes one at a time. Leave narrow bands of uncut rind between folds so the whole face does not collapse into one big hole. Save the largest openings, like the hollow chest, for near the end. Cutting big voids last keeps the pumpkin rigid while you handle it.

   Shade the skull and hood

   Leave the skull face and hood edge as untouched dark rind so they read as shadow against the lit robe. If you want a faint suggestion of the skull, lightly peel only the thin outer skin on a small area rather than cutting through. Keep the eye socket as a single small full cutout for a glowing point. Clean up ragged edges with the tip of your knife.

   Light it and set the angle

   Drop in a battery LED light, warm white or amber, never a candle near the thin cut strips. Turn the pumpkin slightly toward viewers at porch level so the full crouching silhouette lines up. Snap your photo at dusk when the glow reads strongest against the darker background. Mist the cut edges with water and refrigerate overnight to keep the claw fingers crisp.
