   Switch to a fine etching tip and pull short strokes outward from the center of the face, following the direction real fur grows. Vary your pressure to build the fluffy, layered look, and repeat the same radiating strokes on the paws. This is the long part, so take breaks to step back and check the flow.

   Deepen the eyes and nose last

   Carve the two eyes a little deeper than the surrounding fur so they catch the most light and appear to glow, but do not cut all the way through. Leave a thin bridge of flesh across each pupil if you want a slit shape to read clearly. Shave the nose smooth and slightly recessed, then flick in a few very fine whisker lines. Keep these fine lines shallow so they stay attached and do not tear.

   Light it and photograph on the sill

   Drop in a battery LED, warm white looks best for a ginger cat, and set the pumpkin on a windowsill. Test the glow in a dark room and touch up any fur areas that read too flat by shaving them a touch deeper. Mist the cut surfaces or wipe with a little petroleum jelly to slow drying. Shoot your photo the first night while the detail is crisp.
