Deep Hood the Grim Reaper Pumpkin Carving Idea

Pick and transfer the pattern

Choose a hooded skull stencil with clear separation between the face, hood, and robe folds. Tape it snugly to the front of a tall pumpkin and poke the outlines with a pin or a transfer wheel so you leave a dotted map on the skin. Mark which zones are peel-only and which will be cut through so you do not remove too much. Step back and check the whole figure reads before you start cutting.

Open a lid and clean the wall

Have an adult cut a lid from the bottom or the back, not the top, so the stem stays intact and the front face stays smooth. Scoop the pulp and scrape the inside wall behind the design down to about an inch thick. A thinner wall makes the peeled areas glow more evenly and gives the loop tool less to fight through. Dry the inside with a paper towel before you carve.

Peel the face and robe panels

Switch to a shallow loop or ribbon tool and skin off just the top layer of rind across the skull face and the main robe panels. Aim for a smooth, even depth so these areas turn that soft mid orange when lit. Leave the eye sockets, the deep hood edge, and the lines between folds untouched so they stay dark. Work slowly and check the glow as you go by holding the pumpkin up to a window.

Score the fold and hood lines

Use a narrow loop tool to carve the fine lines that separate each robe layer and outline the deep hood. Keep these grooves thin and consistent so they read as crisp shadow lines from across the yard. Do not connect them into big openings; the unremoved ridges between folds are what give the figure its layered depth. Take your time on the flowing fabric near the crossed hands, since those lines carry the shape.

Cut the brightest details last

Save any true cutouts, like the sharpest teeth gaps and small highlight nicks in the eyes, for the end. Make these small and keep bridges of skin between the teeth so the grin stays strong and nothing collapses. Cutting these last means the pumpkin wall stays firm while you do the delicate work. Clean up any ragged edges with the tip of a detail knife.

Light it and photograph

Drop in one or two LED candles or a small battery puck, never a real flame, since the thin peeled areas can scorch. Warm white LEDs give the closest match to that orange skull glow. Set the pumpkin at eye level in a dim room and shoot from straight on so the folds and grin show their contrast. Rotate the light around inside to find the brightest, most even fill.
