Save the largest openings for last so the pumpkin wall stays rigid as long as possible.

   Clean the edges and test the light

   Go back over each cut edge with your knife to bevel it slightly outward, which lets more light escape and sharpens the raven's outline. Drop in an LED tea light or a small battery puck, never a real candle near these thin walls. Look for any spot where the raven shape blurs into the background and trim the surrounding area a little more. A brighter LED gives you the strongest contrast between the dark bird and the glow.

   Stage and photograph it

   Set the pumpkin on a step or porch with the back hole facing away from viewers. Shoot in near darkness so the peeled background reads as warm orange and the raven stays crisp and black. Add a few dry leaves or a lantern nearby for a gothic mood. Keep the pumpkin cool and mist the cut edges if it needs to last a few extra nights.
