   Cut the lightning crack and bandage

   Saw the jagged center crack in short controlled strokes, turning the pumpkin instead of forcing the blade. Then cut the diagonal bandage strip as a full opening. Keep the two ends of the bandage rounded so it reads clearly. These are your brightest full cutouts, so take your time on the edges.

   Cut the outer heart ring last

   Now remove the outer border ring that outlines the whole heart. Cut this big opening last so the wall stayed rigid while you did all the fine work. Support the loose sections with your free hand as you finish each pass. If a stitch bridge feels fragile, leave a little extra pumpkin behind it rather than risk a tear.

   Light it and photograph

   Drop in a battery LED, warm white looks closest to the glowing example. Set it on a porch board at dusk so the cutouts read against the darker skin. Blot inner edges dry and rub a little petroleum jelly on cut faces to slow shrinking. Take your photo the first evening while the lines are sharpest.
