Witch styles to try

A witch can be a single hat cut or a full moonlit flight. Start with the shape that fits your time.

Bubbling cauldron

A pot over a fire with steam or bubbles rising. Cut the bubbles as circles of different sizes and the fire as jagged flames under the pot. The pot itself stays solid, so the design is mostly small round cuts, which are easy with a drill bit or a small saw.

Wicked and movie witches

Elphaba's silhouette in her hat, Glinda's crown and wand, and the two together. The pointed hat and the crown are the identifying shapes, so get those right and the faces can stay simple.

Witch hat

A pointed hat on its own, sometimes with a pair of eyes underneath. It is a single triangle and a brim, which makes it the fastest witch design here. Add a band across the hat by leaving a strip of pumpkin uncut.

Witch portrait

A face in profile with a hooked nose, pointed chin and wisps of hair. Profiles carve well because the outline does the work. Cut the eye and mouth through, then scrape wrinkles and hair strands into the skin.

Witch pumpkin carving FAQ

What is the easiest witch pumpkin design?
A witch hat. Cut a tall triangle with a curved brim beneath it, and you have a pumpkin that reads as a witch from the street. Add two slanted eyes under the brim if you want a face.
How do I carve a witch flying across the moon?
Draw the witch and broom inside a circle, then cut away only the parts of the circle that are not witch. The moon glows and the witch stays as a dark silhouette. Cut the large areas of moon first and finish with the slivers around the broom bristles.
How do I stop the broom handle from breaking?
Make it wider than it looks right, at least half an inch, and angle your knife inward so the bridge is thicker on the inside of the pumpkin than on the outside. Cut it last, when the surrounding pieces are already out.
What color light works for a witch pumpkin?
Green is the classic choice for a witch or a cauldron and makes bubbles look like a real brew. For a flying witch against the moon, plain white or warm yellow keeps the moon looking like a moon.
Are the witch pumpkin stencils free?
Yes. Enter your email on a linked stencil page to unlock its free printable PDF. Print on letter or A4 paper and adjust the scale to your pumpkin. Related stencils may differ from the inspiration images in this gallery.
