   Move next to the jagged flames, cutting each tongue as its own window and leaving thin skin bridges between neighboring flames. Work from the inner flames toward the edge, rotating the pumpkin slowly on a flat surface instead of reaching across your finished cuts. Save the largest flame openings near the rim for last.

   Clean the edges and test the glow

   Go back and bevel the inside edge of each cut slightly toward the light so more glow spills through. Trim any ragged corners with the tip of your blade and brush out the loose bits. Drop in an LED light and check from a few feet back. If a flame reads muddy, widen it a touch or shave the inner wall thinner behind it.

   Light it and photograph

   Use one or two battery LED lights, never a candle, since this design has so many open cuts and thin bridges. Set the pumpkin on a flat table in a dim room and let the halo of orange do the work. Snap your photo slightly off to the side so the demon's face catches the deepest shadow. Mist the cut edges with water if you want to keep them fresh for another day.
