Pick a tall pumpkin and prep it

Choose a large, rounded pumpkin with a smooth front face so the horns and swirls have room to spread. Cut a lid from the bottom or the back rather than the top, which keeps the stem intact and gives you a flat base for an LED light. Scrape the inside wall behind the face down to about one inch thick so light passes through evenly. A thinner wall makes the skinned horn areas glow much better.

Transfer the devil pattern

Tape your home-printed stencil snugly over the front, smoothing out wrinkles so the symmetrical brows and horns line up. Poke closely spaced dots along every line with a pin or a wheel tool, paying extra attention to the pointed eyes and the fang tips. Peel the paper and lightly connect the dots with a washable marker if the layout looks unclear. Double check that both horns curve the same way before you start cutting.

Skin the horn interiors first

Before any full cuts, use a shallow gouge or a lino tool to peel just the top skin off the inside of each curved horn. Remove only the orange skin and leave the pale flesh beneath, which will glow a warm mid tone. Keep the depth even so both horns read the same brightness. This shaded pass is what separates the horns from the fully cut features and gives the face depth.

Cut the eyes, brows, and cheek swirls

With a fine detail saw, cut through the narrowed eyes and the angry brow slots for the brightest highlights. Work the flame-like cheek swirls next, cutting each as a thin curved slot and leaving small uncut bridges between them so the shell stays connected. Cut slowly and let the tool do the work rather than forcing it. Take breaks to check both sides stay balanced.

Carve the fanged grin last

Save the big mouth opening for the end so the face stays rigid while you handle the fine work. Outline the fangs and the lolling tongue first, then remove the open mouth area in a few smaller pieces instead of one large chunk. Leave a bit of extra flesh around each fang tip so they do not snap. Gently push cut pieces inward and out to avoid tearing the points.

Light it and take your photo

Set a flickering LED candle or a small LED puck inside and place the pumpkin at eye level in a dark room. The flicker makes the cheek swirls and mouth dance like flame, which suits the devil theme. Shoot photos with the room lights off for the strongest contrast between the bright cutouts and the dim horns. Rub cut edges with a little petroleum jelly to slow drying and keep the fangs crisp for a few extra days.
