Transfer the design and map your depths

Pick a large, round pumpkin with a smooth face and firm walls. Tape your demon stencil on and poke through the outlines with a pin, then remove the paper and connect the dots with a washable marker. Before cutting, shade in your plan with three tones so you know which areas stay skin-on, which get peeled, and which cut all the way through. This is a complex face, so a clear map saves you from over cutting.

Open the pumpkin and clean the wall

Cut a wide access hole in the bottom rather than the top so the stem stays intact and the pumpkin sits flat on the bench. Have an adult handle all the cutting tools. Scoop the pulp and scrape the inside of the front wall until it is about one inch thick and even. A uniform wall thickness makes your later shading behave predictably.

Rough out the horns and brow

Start with the biggest forms first. Using a loop or ribbon tool, shave the raised ram horns and the heavy brow ridge, leaving them thick so they stay dark and dimensional. Work slowly and keep the deepest cuts shallow enough that you never break through the wall in these areas. These bold shapes frame the whole face, so get their curves flowing before adding detail.

Peel the shaded midtones

Now work the cheeks, snout wrinkles, and flame shapes licking up from the bottom. Peel just the outer skin off these areas with your loop tool so they glow a soft orange when lit. Vary how much skin you remove to build the ridges and valleys of the demon's face. Leave thin bridges of skin between the flame tongues so nothing weakens or tears.

Thin the eyes and cut the fangs last

Save the brightest features for the end. Shave the eyes and the jagged mouth very thin from the inside so they blaze, and only cut fully through the pupils and the gaps between teeth for the sharpest highlights. Keep each fang wide at its base and connected so it stays structurally sound. Because you already shaded around them, these final touches read as the hottest points of the face.

Light it and shoot the photo

Set a bright LED puck light or a battery pillar inside and center it so every tooth and both eyes catch the glow evenly. Test in a dark room and rotate the light to fill any dim spots. Wipe the cut edges and set the pumpkin on a porch or bench for a night portrait. Shoot slightly off center so the horns cast a shadow and the face feels three dimensional.
