Dog styles to try

Most of the dogs on this page are breed portraits. Find your breed, or start with a paw print if you want the easiest win.

Paw print

One large pad and four toe pads, cut through. It is the easiest dog design on the page and it glows beautifully because the shapes are big and simple. A trail of small paw prints climbing the pumpkin is the next step up.

Corgis, pugs, frenchies and small breeds

Big ears, round eyes and short muzzles. These faces carve well because the ears are large simple shapes and the wrinkles can be scraped rather than cut. Cut the eyes and nose through, scrape the muzzle and forehead folds, and leave the ears solid.

Retrievers, shepherds, huskies and big breeds

Long muzzles, upright or floppy ears and lots of fur. Cut the eyes and nose through, scrape the fur in short strokes that follow the direction it grows, and use a peeler to lighten the muzzle. Huskies get a scraped mask around the eyes.

Puppies and funny dogs

Floppy-eared puppies, tongue-out faces, a dog caught mid-poop. These are cartoon faces with the eyes and tongue cut through and the ears scraped. The pooping dog is a silhouette and a scraped pile, and it always gets a laugh on the porch.

Dog pumpkin carving FAQ

What is the easiest dog pumpkin to carve?
A paw print: one large pad and four toe pads, all cut through. If you want a face, a floppy-eared puppy with two round eyes, a nose and a tongue is the simplest, because the ears are solid and only the face gets cut.
How do I carve my dog's breed?
Find the breed in the gallery and look at what the design keeps: usually the ear shape, the muzzle length and one or two markings. Cut the eyes and nose through, and scrape the rest. A photo of your dog in the same pose helps more than any pattern.
How do I carve dog fur?
Scrape it in short strokes that follow the direction the fur grows, with a linoleum cutter or a clay loop. Long-haired breeds get longer, wavier strokes; short-haired breeds get a smooth scrape with a few lines at the edges.
How do I make a dog portrait look like my dog?
Get the ears and the nose right. Those two features carry most of a dog's likeness. Match the ear shape and position exactly, size the nose to the muzzle, and keep the eyes simple. Markings like a white blaze or a dark mask are scraped patches.
Are the dog pumpkin stencils free?
Yes. Enter your email on a linked stencil page to unlock its free printable PDF. Print on letter or A4 paper and adjust the scale to your pumpkin. Related stencils may differ from the inspiration images in this gallery.
